Types of print editions
The Frame House uses professional profiles to scan and print artworks and photos. Each image is proofed using the requested paper, not a cheap proofing paper. Our digital archive and database means that there are no further set-up charges on re-prints, and we can also help artists keep records of limited editions.

Original edition
The term ‘original’ can imply exclusivity or the idea that the work is ‘one of a kind’ rather than a copy by any method including digital printing . Not all hand-painted works can be considered original since the term also refers to the image being newly created, so a painted copy of another work is not an original.
Artist’s proof
Originally, an artist’s proof was one of the first “pulls” from a series of limited edition prints. It was intended to be given to the artist by the printer for evaluation. The artist would approve the edition based on the consistency and quality of these proofs.
Because the number of whole print proofs is usually very small, and because no two artist’s proofs are identical, the artist’s proofs are more rare and have come to be considered more valuable by collectors. They are marked ‘AP’ rather than numbered.
Open Edition Prints
Open edition – A set of prints made in an unspecified or unlimited number of impressions. The opposite of open edition is a limited edition.
Limited edition prints
The artist or photographer decides how many prints are going to be made from the original.
Each image is signed and marked with the number of the print, for example 5/100 is number 5 from an edition of 100
When evaluating the value of a limited edition print, several factors would need to be considered:
1. The popularity and reputation of the artist
2. Prices of his other limited edition prints
3. Prices of prints of a comparable artist
4. Whether or not previously released edition have sold out
5. The latest price of sold-out editions
