What materials are used for Giclée printing?
Papers and canvas
Papers and canvas are also called substrates The Frame House stocks a wide variety of substrates including archival Hahnemuhle, Canon and Kodak.
In order to achive the best possible results, unlike some printing services, our proofs are printed onto the final output medium, not generic proofing paper.
Archival Standard papers and canvases are natural cotton or alpha cellulose acid free; RC (resin coated inkjet papers) are not archival because of the top synthetic receptor coating.
We also have a non-archival range of substrates and can offer a range to suit your needs and resources – our staff will be pleased to advise you.
We can produce paper based Panorama printouts up to 1.20 metres by 36 metres; canvas panoramas are not quite as wide.
We are also able to offer Museum quality and non-reflective glass for your frames
Printer
The Frame House uses a Canon iPF 8100 44” large format printer.
The Canon iPF 8100 offers one of the widest colour gamut in its class, providing accurate colour reproduction on a variety of media at 2,400 x 1,200 dpi using 12-colour pigment inks.
The inks are designed to give outstanding colour stability and high abrasion resistance.
Inks
There are basically two types of inks used in inkjet printing:
Dye inks:
- Dye made prints present the brightest colours and the widest colour gamut. Unfortunately Dye inks can fade relatively quickly.
Pigment inks:
- Pigments tend to have a gamut a little narrower than dyes but pigments inks are much more stable and have a proven lifetime of up to 100 years. We use pigment inks from Canon to insure the best possible colour and stability ratings. Canon inks represent the latest technology in wide gamut rendition as well as scuff resistance.
