This delightful family group was sent to us by Mrs Stewart. The image is torn and scratched, but the most important thing was to repair the faces.

The repair work done on this image
Mrs Margaret Howell sent us this charming group photograph to have the major damage removed.
At first sight the biggest problem was the loss of surface where the crack ran down the image, but the image had also lost a lot of detail due to the surface buckling round the crack.

The human eye can often compensate for changes in light reflection, or greasy areas on a photo – you may notice yourself changing the angle of the photo to see it better – but when light bounces back onto the scanner it leaves under exposed or white areas that we have to rebuild. This is a screen print of the layers used to rebuild the damaged areas.
Definitely not a ‘one-click repair’

The old photo of the young soldier had water stains and faded areas which meant the image had to be rebuilt, but still keep the textures of his uniform.
The picture of the couple had faded badly and got a colour cast. after discussion with the client, it was decided to change the image to grey-scale, with just a hint of sepia, rather than try to recolour it.
This small picture had been almost torn in two. Initially the image was repaired and kept as a soft-edged grey-scale image to keep the ‘old’ photo effect, then the colour was re-introduced using ‘Curves’ in Photoshop.
